Big Ben strikes to break 14 year record
After last week’s awful weather put paid to the Barrow Central Wheeler’s Coast Road 10 mile time trial, it was a relief for everyone that they could get back in the saddle on Wednesday night.
An extended field of 34 took to the start line, with representatives from no fewer than eight clubs showing just how popular these time trials have become. The event also saw the return of juniors to the race, with three riders taking the opportunity to test themselves against the adults.
With weather not looking conducive to fast times, it was a night to be remembered as Kendal CC’s Ben Granger beat the course record by a solitary second with a time of 21 mins 10 secs, setting an impressive average speed of 28.43mph, eclipsing a record which had been proudly held by Paul O’Mahoney for 14 years. The podium places were filled by BCW’s David Huck (22mins 48secs) and Kevin Chadwick of Lakes RC (23mins).
Christina Wiojak made it a record breaking double on the night as she took nine seconds off her own ladies course record set just two weeks earlier, recording a time of 24mins 1 sec. The next target for the Team Jaden-Cyclespace Viva le Velo rider must surely be to break that 24min barrier.
Lakes RC’s Henry Cowell took the fastest junior prize recording a time of 28mins 59secs beating Jacob Wiles of BCW by eight seconds. Salt Ayre Cog Set rider Oliver Oldham’s 31mins 26secs rounded out the category.
Along with her course record, Christina obviously also set her own personal best, and was joined by ten other riders recording their fastest times to date; Peter Armistead, Fraser Minnican, Jon Brown, Josh Bailey, Michael Connolly, Stuart Garnett, Jacob Wiles, Gradley Pitman, Danny Burns and Richard Butler will all be delighted with their rides.
The next event will again be on the Coast Road 10mile course Wednesday 5th August, full entry details can be found on the Barrow Central Wheelers Facebook page.
