Big wheels keep on turning for Proud Mary
Any cyclist will tell you that climbing up a 25% gradient into a headwind isn’t the kind of racing conducive to fast times and course records. However Mary Wilkinson (pictured above) representing Yorkshire RC, didn’t get that memo as she stormed up Knottallow Hill just outside of Ulverston, her time of 6.59 mins breaking the Ladies course record by a massive 35 seconds. Not only did her run break the seven minute barrier but it was good enough to take her to fifth place out of the 26 riders who took up the challenge in this weeks BCW time trial.
After last weeks win up Gamswell, Dave Huck (BCW) made it two on the bounce, being the only competitor to record a time under six minutes, his 5.56 mins being just eleven seconds off his own PB and course record. Tom Stephenson (Lakes RC) followed Dave home in a time of 6.08 mins, another near miss for Tom who has competed in three hill climbs this year taking the runners up spot every time. Rumours of his new nickname being ‘The Bridesmaid’ are yet to be confirmed. BCW’s Richard Morgan (pictured) continued to show improving form as after a couple of top 5 finishes he found himself on the podium taking third place with a personal best time of 6.42 mins.
Junior Dylan Edwards (pictured left) of Papyrus Racing will be delighted with his time of 7.32 mins which saw him scrape into the top 10. Pushing out Graham Carrick by a solitary second, not that Graham didn’t give it his all, as the image below shows.
Along with Richard Morgan, personal bests were achieved on the night by Paul Quinn & Joshua Bailey both representing the Wheelers.
As the shortened season starts to come to a close, the committee would like to express their gratitude to all riders and spectators who have adhered to the Covid compliant rules and encourage them to not let their guard down these last few weeks.
Sadly due to the recent developments as far as Covid is concerned, the Cross Country trials that would normally take place through the Autumn are cancelled for the time being.
