Huck takes the Helm in final time trial

The last time trial of a curtailed season saw Barrow Central Wheelers host riders on a new hill climb. Coulton Hill, situated just outside Spark Bridge saw a short, punchy test of around 400 metres with an elevation of 64 metres attracting 21 riders from a variety of local clubs.

Richard Morgan (left) was the first to take to the hill. Setting a strong target for those following behind of under two minutes he hit the line in 1.57 mins. A time which would see him finish the evening in a strong fourth place. That was to be no match for David Huck (main picture) though, who took the number one spot in some style, his time of 1.38 mins being an impressive 9 seconds faster than his nearest challenger Richard Helm (1.47 mins).

On what was a great night for the BCW squad it was Sam Lashley of CCCR who spoilt the party a little, recording the third fastest time of the evening with 1.54 mins.

Christina Wiejak (Jadan Cyclespace) ended the season in the form she has shown throughout, setting the fastest ladies time of 2.23 mins. Quickest junior was another rider who has shown consistency all year in the shape of Oliver Oldham (Salt Eyre Cog Set) his time of 2.28 mins setting a marker for future youngsters on the course. Oliver (right) was pushed all the way by Will Dykes of Papyrus who was just two seconds behind him at the line.

That wraps up a strange season for the Wheelers. A season which at one stage didn’t look like taking place at all. However thanks to the committee’s diligent work in the face of ever changing Covid 19 regulations and the support and acceptance of all the riders, a total of ten time trials have taken place. This feat cannot be underplayed, as many clubs in the country had given up on trying to stage any kind of racing in 2020.

The riders now head into winter training knowing the club is in safe hands and SportFurness look forward to reporting on a full programme of events in 2021.
