Park loss is Alfred A’s gain as unbeaten tag goes
The last remaining unbeaten tag in the Walney League fell this week when Walney Park suffered an 8-3 defeat at home to an impressive Barrow Island team.
Jamie Humphrey was on fire in his game, crushing his opponent 21-4, a score all the more vital when only two points ended up separating the teams in the aggregate. Robert Goodburn playing his first game of the season was just as impressive winning 21-11 against a tough opponent. The Park’s Paul Hewitson continued his fine form as he ran out an easy 21-6 winner, giving him another opportunity to regale his work colleagues with and end by end review of the game.
King Alfred A took advantage of the Park’s loss to take the league’s top spot, although they have played a game more than their nearest rivals. Merit leader Mike Hool (left) kept his unbeaten run intact with a 21-13 victory, Ethan Lowden and Gill Corran backing him up with 21-16 wins at home to South End. The Caravaner’s Paul Imison secured their best result on the night 21-12, but couldn’t stop them falling to a 7-3 defeat.
North Scale welcomed King Alfred to Thirteen Cornered Lane for what turned out to be a titanic battle. The games were tied at four apiece and as the points were added up at the end there was just a single chalk between them, the away team taking it 140-139 and so the game 7-4. Glenis McDonald (right) was King Alfred’s top performer with an excellent 21-8 victory. Apparently Glenis is worried about me taking the mickey out of her, as if I would do that Glenis. In response The Scale’s Brenda Gillen showed her true form this week with a tremendous 21-10 win. The Alf also saw wins for Martin Barrow, Steve Atkinson and Keith Mills whilst Brenda was backed up by the home side’s top 3, Gordon Walker, Glyn Stevens and Peter O’Connor.
King Alfred B made it a hat trick for the pub’s sides as they returned from their visit to Walney Park B with an 8-3 victory. Tony George gained his first win of the season in some style with a 21-6 scoreline, a feat matched by Dave Whitehead (left) who, having suffered 21-20 defeats the last two weeks made sure that wasn’t happening again with a 21-9 win., maybe retirement suits him after all. The Park side are beginning to show improvement and their first win won’t be far away, Roger Quayle (21-11) led the fightback for them along with Anne Lyons (21-18) and Pam Bain (21-16) who was also recording her first win of the season and will now surely kick on.
Whilst the Alfred were making it a hat trick of wins, Walney Park A’s defeat 7-3 defeat away at Barrow Island A meant that the club suffered three defeats. The Island second string have been showing improved form and justifiably took their first win of the season with Dave and Barbara Dent securing 21-9 and 21-19 wins respectively and being joined in winners corner by Terry Marshall, Anne Worton and Neil McDonald. The Park team relied on the Sharples clan as top man Callum took his game 21-16, Dad John was made to work even harder getting over the line 21-20. They were both outshone by Leo ‘The Lion’ Clarke though, whose 21-6 victory almost brought the aggregate home, just missing out by 2 chalks in the end.
