Island’s B Team turn up late to the party, but its ruined by Caravaners
‘WHAT’S THAT COMING OVER THE HILL?…IS IT A MONSTER?….Errr No its Barrow Island B, who played their first fixture of the season in the Walney League. They may be 6 games behind the rest of the league but there is time to catch up and its great to see them take to the greens.
Sadly, their opponents South End didn’t even think to bring a present, instead inflicting an 8-3 defeat on the Islanders.
South End’s star man was Dave Hunt who won 21-9 for his fourth win in five games, Dave Linton (21-12) and Paul Imison (21-13) ensured the caravan club took the aggregate point. Barrow Island’s Bob Heron (right) had a great start to his season winning 21-12, proving the point that his brother Derek talks a good game whilst Bob plays one. Dave Goodburn’s 21-17 victory against an inform player was another great performance, showing once again that as sportsmen’s knees give out they can make the transition to bowls quickly.
It was Derby Day at Walney Park, where the B team hosted their A team. On this occasion the A team dominated the match, winning 9-2, although many of the games went down to the wire. Sadly the B team had to give a game away , meaning the aggregate was a done deal before a jack was bowled. Sandra Jeffries took the sweep for the A team with her fourth win of the season 21-13. Steve Lackey following her home 21-14. The B team saw a fast improving Alan Stark win 21-16 and Roger Quayle take his game 21-17 to continue his run of win one lose one (Anybody taking bets on next week’s result?).
King Alfred A continue their reign at the top after a comprehensive 9-1 victory at home to Barrow Island A. Merit leader Mike Hool made it seven games unbeaten 21-11, a feat matched by Ethan Lowden (left) although both were outshone by Mike’s much better half Tina who was excellent in her 21-8 victory. I imagine Tina and Anne Marie will remind Mike of this fact a few times in the coming week. Ronnie Walmsley has had some real battles the last few games and this week was no different as he overcame a difficult opponent to win 21-19 and avoid the dreaded doughnut for Barrow Island.
West Shore are still within touching distance of the leaders after their 7-4 defeat of North Scale. Yvonne Clark maintained her 100% record with a 21-12 victory at the top of the sheet whilst Katy Wright and Elaine Wilson followed her home with 21-13 wins along with Paul Knott, who wanted to prove the men do also contribute to the team. North Scale’s Brenda Gillen followed up her great win last week with a 21-11 victory this week, although it should be noted that she was quite literally playing the bus driver in Dave Leach. Kristian Ogilvie and Glyn and Julia Stevens scored the Scale’s other points.
King Alfred find themselves in third place after a superb 9-2 victory away at Walney Park. Top man Martin Barrow led the way for the Alfred after his controversial dropping to the B team last week with a comprehensive 21-10 defeat of his Barrow league teammate “Legger” whilst Steve Atkinson (21-14) and Wendy Holmes (21-16) played supporting roles for the pub side. The Parkie’s wins were gained by ‘Diddy’ Dave Staunton (21-18) and Liz Marsden (21-17).
In the final match of the week Barrow Island kept themselves in touch with the leaders with a 7-3 defeat of King Alfred B. Jamie Humphrey has been showing real improvement the last few games and this showed again with a 21-10 victory this week, setting up the win for the Island. Joe O’Leary wasn’t far behind with his own 21-13 win. The Alfred had the fun packed, always entertaining duo of Jeff Hinde and Peter Roberts to thank for their points, both winning to 16 along with Phyllis Kyriakou (right) whose 21-19 victory was her first of the season, having been unlucky in her two previous games losing to 18 and 20.
