Walk On…Walk on…
When Gareth ‘Nico’ Nicholson passed away on the 7th November 2020 aged just 49 he left a huge hole in so many lives. Battling cancer for several months, he fought the illness with positivity and dignity and typically continued to put others first.
Gareth was a loving family man and a friend to so many people across Furness from Alfred Barrow School, the Shipyard, Colony Candles, Northern Rail, the Rugby League community, Furness Rovers Junior Football Club and the Barrow in Furness Liverpool FC supporters club.
In what would have have been the week of his 50th birthday his family and friends have undertaken the task of a walk in remembrance of him from his spiritual home of Anfield to his hometown of Barrow. In total the walk is in excess of 100 miles and after starting on Thursday they will today cross the finish line at Barrow Railway Station (Approx 9pm).
The final leg of the walk will commence from The Wellington Pub in Dalton-in-Furness at 7.30pm and the walkers would appreciate as many as possible walking those last few miles with them.
En route the walkers have been blown away by the support they have received from well wishers, have appeared on local radio and made an impression on many strangers to such an extent that the original target of £5000 has already been smashed and the total currently stands at over £12000.
All monies raised will go to St Mary’s Hospice who provided care for Gareth with approximately £400 being donated to the Furness Rovers U14 team. Gareth has three children Jenna, Bethan and Harry. Harry plays football for Furness Rovers and it is the intention for the team strip next season to have the name Nicholson emblazoned on it.
The walk organiser Barry FItzsimmons admitted this morning that he is in agony but nothing will stop them completing as they set off from Milnthorpe he added “It has been a real team effort with support crews aiding us along the route with invaluable help that we could not have done without”.
Also completing their own marathon today are Graeme Petcher & Gav Boyd who have been doing the equivalent distance at Nuffield Health Barrow on a rowing machine & upright bike.
