It’s a Shore thing in the Walney League

West Shore hit the top spot in the Walney League bowls after their emphatic 8 -2 victory over South End.

Jackie Knott and Yvonne Clark both kept up their 100% records with 21-13 and 21-15 wins respectively to set them up for the win. Zach ‘Gail’ Walker (21-12) and Ann Morrison (21-13) backing them up with good wins of their own. The Caravan Club had top man Joe Goligy and Paul Fieldhouse to thank for their wins.

The night before the Shore had matched the 8-2 score when they entertained Walney Park A. Zach Walker made it two sweeps in a week with his awesome 21-6 win. Leo Clark replied with his own 21-9 victory for the Park, John Sharples being their other winner, although he was lucky to get the bus driver in Dave Leach.

King Alfred A played “away” against their B team, the game going to form as they ran out 9-2 winners, a result that moved them into second place in the table. Ethan Lowden (21-10), Gill Corran (21-11) and Mo Mills (21-12) all securing good victories. Top man for the B team, Ian Pearson won again to go top of the individual merits, Barney Cleasby being the other winner for them.

Walney Park are the only unbeaten team left in the league, currently sitting in third place having played a game less than the top 2. Their victims this week were a North Scale team who themselves were unbeaten going into the game. Dave Staunton showed that all his practice is finally beginning to pay off as he was a very impressive 21-6 victor over a tough opponent, Mike Davey following him into the winners enclosure with an excellent 21-8 win of his own. Mr North Scale, Gordon Walker won 21-9 to stake a claim to the “Best in the Walker family” title, whilst in a rare outing, league secretary and cuddly ogre Kristian Ogilvie took his game 21-14, not enough to stop the Park taking the game 7-3.

Barrow Island almost took maximum points against the struggling Walney Park B squad, taking the game 9-1. Leading the way for the Islanders were Joe O’Leary (21-10) and Sam Humphrey (21-12) at the bottom of the sheet. Saving the Park blushes and showing her heart was Anne Lyons (heart…Lyons…get it?) who got other the line in a titanic 21-20 battle.

South End neutralised their heavy defeat at the hands of the leaders when they took on Barrow Island A on their own patch. In a game much closer than the scoreline suggested the homesters won 8-2. Paul Holmes 21-10 being the standout win at top man, whilst it was a case of Wham Bram thank you Ma’am as Mike Bram won 21-9 for the Island.
